Self in Segments

Self in Segments is a sculptural exploration of a fragmented self and the complex process of trying to find resolution. The piece was created using alginate molds taken from my body, capturing the physicality and imperfection inherent to the human form. These molds were cast in wax and then attached to a 3D-printed base. The entire sculpture was surrounded by ceramic shell, and the wax and 3D print were burned out, leaving space for molten bronze to be poured into the final mold.

The resulting sculpture is a tactile, functional Rubik’s Cube, with each rotating face symbolizing the different facets of identity and the constant challenge of aligning them. The layers are able to spin, thanks to 30 ball bearings placed between each, representing the tension and movement within one's personal journey. The cube’s ability to turn echoes the process of self-discovery and the attempt to solve a self that feels fragmented, while the bronze, permanent and unyielding, serves as a reminder of the solidifying nature of experiences over time. Through this piece, I aim to capture the ongoing struggle of reconciling the pieces of oneself and the sometimes elusive nature of inner harmony.
